Puppy Information from Allegiance Portuguese Water Dogs (PWDs)
Thank you for your inquiry regarding Allegiance PWD. Allegiance PWD’s is owned by Amy Lane. I am happily married, and my husband and I have 6 adult children, several PWD’s and moved to the Nature Coast of Florida. We are not a breeding kennel, a hobby breeder or looking to show our children the miracle of life. Dogs are Amy’s passion. She is deeply involved with the PWD breed and was formerly involved in Newfoundland’s as well. Amy has held positions on the Board of both National and Regional breed clubs as well as chaired National Specialties and has or currently volunteers on several PWDCA committees. Amy is also a strong supporter of the Junior Showmanship and Owner Handlers in the PWD breed.
Amy has owned PWDs since 2005 and has been active since the moment the first PWD entered her family. Amy is very involved in conformation and has bred several PWD litters since 2005. She also dabbles in the performance/working events with the PWD’s. These events include obedience, rally, water, FastCat, scentwork and agility. The PWD is a very versatile breed and excels in many different venues in addition to making a wonderful pet. Others also like to train their PWD’s for therapy work.
We occasionally have puppies available. These puppies are not on a first come, first served basis. We match the puppy to the right family. Keeping with our breeding program goals, puppies that exhibit promise for show/conformation prospect and/or working aptitude are placed in homes prior to any other puppies. This does not mean the quality of puppy that your family wants as a pet/companion is any less in temperament, soundness, type, or structure. The differences between our show/pet puppies are very subtle and usually the decisions between show/pet puppies are difficult choices for us as breeders.
Each litter bred here at Allegiance is bred with the expectation of us keeping a puppy. We breed to further and enhance our breeding program and preserve the Portuguese Water Dog. We don’t just breed a litter to have puppies to sell. All our PWD pups are born and raised in our home their entire lives. The pups are extremely well socialized, exposed to children, adults, dogs, cats, noises, water and the outdoors. Our puppies are raised with the Puppy Culture principles, and we encourage our prospective homes to investigate the Puppy Culture program. We allow families to visit the puppies beginning at 4 weeks old until the last one has found their forever home. Our puppies go home no earlier than 8 weeks, more commonly they are 9 or 10 weeks when they move on to their forever families.
Getting a puppy from Allegiance PWD’s means your pup will not only be well socialized and exposed to the world but we also provide the following with your new PWD:
Vaccines current to their age (we begin at 7 weeks) - Wormed as needed - Micro chipped for permanent identification using an ISO chip from AKC CAR - Vet exam at 7 to 8 weeks - CAER examination by a Canine Ophthalmologist - Contract and Guarantee for your puppy - AKC Registration - Puppy folder with feeding, training and breed information - Online TRAINING LIBRARY area of Allegiance Portuguese Water Dog website that is continually updated with articles and training tips - Never ending breeder support via email, phone or regular mail.
All our puppies are sold on limited registration unless going into a show prospect home. Puppies placed into show homes on full registration will be sold on a co-ownership with Amy as a mentor. All puppies sold on limited registration are placed on a mandatory spay/neuter contract by 2 years of age. At ANY time throughout the ENTIRE life of your PWD if you ever find yourself in a situation where you can no longer continue to keep the PWD from Allegiance you MUST return the PWD directly to Amy at Allegiance PWDs.
Our PWDs should never end up in rescue, sold to another party or given away. We will take complete responsibility for all the dogs we breed for their entire lives should you not be able to continue to keep them.
We would expect that prior to committing to a PWD puppy from any breeder you will do your homework. Please visit breeders and see their dogs prior to any commitment if distance allows, if not ask for references. Make sure that you investigate any/all health issues regarding PWDs. Be sure to check certificates for hip dysplasia, CAER exam, JDCM (on at least 1 parent), GM-1 storage (at least one parent) and PRA, EOPRA, and MOS. It is important to talk to the breeder you choose about health issues in their pedigrees or the health clearances that the parents have. No dog can have OFA hip or elbow clearances prior to 24 months of age. All this information can be found on our website as well the PWDCA.org (PWD Club of America).

PUPPY PLACEMENT PROCESS
By placing a deposit for an Allegiance Portuguese Water Dog Puppy, the “Purchaser” states that they understand the following conditions:
SELECTION OF A PUPPY
The purchaser is aware that they will not be selecting their puppy alone from the litter, the breeder will assist to determine if there is a puppy available that is suitable for your home. Multiple factors must be evaluated to get the right puppies into the correct home. The most important factor is temperament. We use your family’s application, notes made about your family throughout the process, breeder’s notes, and evaluation of the puppy, 6-week-old puppy party visit family form, and temperament testing and vet evaluation. Next, we evaluate the puppy’s structure and quality to determine whether the puppy should be placed in a show/breeding home or a non-breeding home. Finally, after sorting through these conditions above we try our best to match your preference in coat type, gender, and color.
Please remember that temperament is the most important consideration. You cannot live with a dog, no matter how beautiful its coat color and markings are, if the puppy does not have the correct personality for your family.
WHEN WILL WE KNOW WHICH PUPPY IS OURS?
While we observe all our puppies throughout their development, we do not complete the evaluation process until the puppies are 8 weeks old. All our outside testing is completed around 7.5 to 8 weeks old. At this time, we feel that armed with the results of any temperament evaluations, vet exams, CAER examinations, and our notes we can make the best determination on which puppy belongs to which family, pet or show home. At times waiting can be difficult for families, especially those with children, but we ask that you be patient and let the process work for you. We make our family placements around 9 weeks of age.
IMPORTANT NOTE!!!
It will be to your benefit to make yourself as available as possible to visit the puppies, attend the 6-to-7-week puppy party, view photos and videos on Allegiance PWDs Facebook group, Instagram and/or TikTok, to be as familiar as possible with the puppies you hope to add to your family. We understand traveling here prior to picking up your puppy may not be possible for all families, although encouraged.
IS YOUR DEPOSIT REFUNDABLE?
If, through the placement process we have determined that we do NOT have a suitable puppy for a family, the deposit is 100% refundable. We will offer you a place on the next available Allegiance litter OR we will refund the deposit and work with you to refer you to another reputable breeder. If you have placed a deposit on a puppy and we have offered you a puppy that we feel will be the right fit for your family and you choose not to take that particular puppy; you can remain on the waitlist for the next Allegiance litter or if you chose not to wait the purchaser understands that they will forfeit the deposit upon the family’s decision. We will refund half of the deposit when that puppy is placed in a permanent home. The reason for this policy is that once we have filled our deposit waitlist, we start referring to other breeders and therefore may need to re-advertise to find the puppy a suitable home.
